Just Keep Swimming: How Rafael Isip Balances It All

The Ateneo swimmer opens up about discipline, Dory wisdom, and his eternal quest for sushi

You’ll most likely find Rafael “Rafa” Isip doing one of three things: crushing laps in the pool, juggling assignments, or—most probably—hunting down his next meal somewhere around campus. “I’m always hungry,” he laughs, “so you’re gonna find me looking for my next meal or already in the middle of one.”

It’s this refreshingly honest perspective that makes the Ateneo swimmer so relatable. But don’t let his food-obsessed exterior fool you—beneath lies the discipline of someone who’s cracked the code on balancing competitive swimming with student life.

His secret? Breaking everything down. “I set clear, realistic goals so I know what to prioritize without getting overwhelmed,” he explains. “I focus on one workout or one assignment at a time, making sure I give myself space to rest and have fun. Those smaller goals keep me consistent, and over time they add up.”

When asked to describe his swimming style using a movie character, Rafa doesn’t hesitate: “I would compare myself to Dory from Finding Nemo because I just gotta keep swimming! Sometimes I may be hyper-focused, but also sometimes a little all over the place.”

That Dory energy extends to his proudest moment at Ateneo. “Contributing to the team during UAAP wasn’t just about competition, but witnessing how much we’ve grown together as people. Seeing my teammates push past their limits and turn blood, sweat, and tears into growth—being able to grow alongside them is something I’m deeply grateful for.”

Here’s the plot twist: this guy who seems so comfortable is actually pretty reserved in class. “I’m actually talkative,” he admits with a grin. “I usually just keep to myself in class and don’t know how to approach classmates. But once you get to know me, I can be quite loud sometimes!”

The Rafa Files:

  • Instant turn-on: Goal-oriented people
  • How fans describe him: Jolly
  • Magic words: “Wanna eat sushi?”
  • Alternate career: Pianist

Maybe that’s his real secret—staying grounded in simple pleasures while keeping eyes on bigger goals. Whether channeling Dory in the pool or hunting for food around campus, Rafa Isip has figured out how to just keep swimming through it all.

Pro tip: If you see him around JSEC looking hungry, offering sushi is apparently a guaranteed way to make a new friend.
